Horace Hines
Monday, April 14, 2008

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Three persons are booked to appear before the Western Regional Gun Court tomorrow in relation to the February shooting of Corporal Peter Salkey and a member of his church.

The trio - 20-year-old taxi operator Patrick Beckford, 46-year-old Willie Dayes, both of Bethel Town addresses; and 18-year-old John Mayston of a Montego Bay address - will answer to charges of wounding with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

Mayston was pointed out in an identification parade last week.

Meanwhile, the police are in search of another man who they have identified only as 'Brown Man' of a St James address in connection with the shooting.

Shortly after 9:00 pm on Thursday, February 7, Corporal Salkey, the Constabulary Communication Network liaison officer for the St James Police Division; a church leader and a small group of church members were attacked by two armed men minutes after they left a Men's Fellowship meeting at their church in Bethel Town, Westmoreland.

The church leader ran across the road and fell in nearby bushes while the injured cop drew his firearm and shot at the men before he collapsed.

Another church member was hurt during the attack.
