Reid.... prime suspect in the murder of 61-year-old retired British nurse Barbara Jayne Scott

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Thirty-year-old labourer Omar Reid, a prime suspect in the murder of 61-year-old retired British nurse Barbara Jayne Scott, was last night being interrogated for the second night by senior investigators at the Freeport Police Station.

Reid was apprehended by the police shortly after 11:00 Wednesday night during an 'intelligence-driven' operation by the St James police in the hilly terrain of Cambridge in the parish.

Last night, commander for the St James Police Division Superintendent Steve McGregor praised residents of the parish who were co-operative with the police during the search for the accused man.

".We have this man in custody now who is the largest part of the puzzle and we are hoping that in a short while we can bring closure to the case," Superintendent McGregor told reporters yesterday.

Scott, who had been in Jamaica since January, was staying in Somerton when she went missing on March 15.

The police immediately sought the whereabouts of Reid who had also disappeared at the same time. Reid, said the police, had an intimate relationship with Scott.

On March 21, Good Friday, after a seven-day search, the police fished the corpse of the retired nurse from a concrete-sealed sewerage pit in the rustic community of Somerton, St James.

It took the police, who were assisted by firefighters, more than seven hours to remove the corpse from the pit, after receiving intelligence that she was dumped there.

The body had a fractured skull, believed to be caused by a blunt instrument. An on-the-spot post-mortem was performed by government pathologist Dr Murari Sorangi.
