Man steals $112,000 from his grandfather

Thursday, March 27, 2008

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - A 21-year-old man who pleaded guilty to fleecing his 82-year-old grandfather of $112,000 is to return to court on Tuesday, April 15 when he is expected to make restitution and be sentenced.

Shyon Mitto, a labourer of Riverside Park, Ensom City, Spanish Town pleaded guilty to simple larceny after a video tape showed him withdrawing the money from an ATM in Spanish Town.

Detective Constable Andrew Blair told the Spanish Town Criminal Court last Tuesday that in December 2007, Ezekiel Mitto went to the bank to withdraw money and was advised that his account was empty. The news surprised the senior citizen and sent his blood pressure up as he maintained that he had made no transactions since August 2007.

But the bank insisted that between September and November 2007, 52 withdrawals totalling $112,000 were made from the account.

When Ezekiel Mitto was shown a video tape with a man withdrawing money from an ATM in Spanish Town, he identified the man as his grandson, Shyon.

The matter was reported to the police and the younger Mitto was arrested in February.

The young man's mother and an aunt, who both reside in New York, told Senior St Catherine Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar that he was taking care of his grandfather and began stealing when the senior citizen sent him to withdraw $10,000. Instead, he withdrew $50,000. They said it was a shame that because of Shyon's behaviour they now have to employ a caregiver to stay with their father.

The court extended Shyon Mitto's $50,000 bail.
