POLICE in St Thomas are urging residents to look out for several counterfeit $1,000 notes which are circulating in the parish.

The call comes following Monday's arrest of five persons and the seizure of a quantity of the fake cash along the Yallahs main road in the parish.

Police say the five persons, who are all residents of Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston, were arrested after they were found with a total of $37,000 in counterfeit $1,000 bills.

The accused - 20-year-old Paul Campbell, Shawn Gayle, 21, Orette Gayle, 29, Rohan Edwards, 28, and Christie Hibberts, 30 - were arrested after the cops intercepted a Toyota Hiace minibus, registered 9544 EV, in which they were travelling.

According to Detective Inspector Don Carlos Bell, shortly after 8:00 pm, police operating on information intercepted and searched the vehicle near a Total Gas Station along the Yallahs Main Road.

A quantity of the notes, he said, was found stashed in a compartment of the vehicle's steering wheel while two additional bills were found in Hibbert's possession.

"We also seized a quantity of cash from them, which is an indication that they might have been spending the counterfeit notes in surrounding areas," Bell said yesterday.

The four are scheduled to answer to the charges in the Yallahs Resident Magistrate's Court later this week.
