Accused in murder of senior cop gets bail

Thursday, March 20, 2008

ROHAN Townsend, one of four accused in the November murder of Assistant Commissioner of Police Gilbert Kameka, was yesterday offered $100,000 bail in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court.

The bail, with one surety, was offered by Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown, who said he had read the case files and could see no reason for further remanding Townsend.

Townsend, 21, who is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and accessory after the fact, was ordered to report to the Half-Way-Tree Police Station every Monday between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm, as one of the conditions of his bail.

Townsend and the other accused - Massinissa Adams, 26; Kemar Dawkins, 18; and Tina-Gaye McGowan, also 18 - who are all charged with murder, are to return to court on April 16.

Kameka, 48, was shot dead on November 29 last year at premises in Irish Town, St Andrew, where he had reportedly gone to spend time with McGowan, who has told the police that they both were intimately involved.

Kameka, the highest-ranked Jamaican police officer to be murdered, had his firearm stolen after the shooting.
