113 murders in first 27 days

Thursday, January 31, 2008

A total of 113 people were murdered in the first 27 days of this year, police statistics have shown.

It was, however, 16 less than the 129 murders recorded for the corresponding period last year.

Seven women and three men were among the 113 deaths, which included four double killings.

Most of the murders, 17, took place in the St Catherine North Police Division, while the parishes of Clarendon and St James saw 14 and nine persons being murdered, respectively, while 12 murders were recorded in the St Andrew South Division.

In the meantime, there have been six fatal police shootings up to January 27, compared to nine in January 2007. Two persons were also fatally shot by licensed firearm holders.
