MONTEGO BAY, St James - Horace Haughton, a thief whose rap sheet dates back to 1998, and who is to be sentenced on February 11 for six counts of fraudulent conversion, has asked the court for help with his drug problem.
Senior Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry, who remanded him in custody when he appeared before her on Monday, remained unconvinced.
"How can I help you when you are a thief?" she asked Haughton, who has at least 40 previous convictions for fraud and is facing six new charges for incidents occurring after he returned from jail in August last year.
The judge was told that Haughton had not received any help for his addiction while serving a two-year sentence. Allegations are that between September 29 and October 5, Haughton issued RBTT bank cheques to seven complainants totalling $381,194.75 for goods and services, including televisions, a refrigerator, hotel accommodation, and office equipment.
The complainants would later discover that Haughton's account was closed.
In 2006, Haughton was given two years for three counts of obtaining money by false pretences. In 2003 he was found guilty on 24 counts and in 1999, he was charged with 13 counts.
