Cops arrest alleged Clarendon serial rapist

Monday, January 21, 2008

A man, described by the Clarendon police as a serial rapist, and his 23-year-old spouse are now in police custody after police rescued a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted and held hostage for six days.
Both are facing charges of kidnapping, while the man has also been charged for rape.

The man, who police sources say is an ex-soldier, was held after police from the Clarendon Division, the Organised Crime Investigative Division and the Special Anti- Crime Task Force, raided a house at Palmetto Pen and rescued the girl.

According to Clarendon crime chief Cleon Marsh, the man is also a suspect in a number of other rapes that have occurred in the parish.

"He is going to undergo identification parades for rapes that happened last year. He is a serial rapist who has committed this crime before," Marsh said.

Marsh said the woman was a willing accomplice to the crime.
"She helps take care of them and keeps them in custody. She would also cook and clean," Marsh said.

Police say the men at first demand a ransom payment of $200,000 before raising it to $300,000 and finally demanding $500,000.

The teenager was assaulted a number of times, police say.
The Clarendon police also arrested two men in connection with the stabbing death of 79-year-old Joseph Lovelace in the Smithsville district.

Lovelace, also called 'Chickie', was stabbed all over his body and had his throat slashed after his killers invaded his house last Monday night.

Homicide investigators said a domestic dispute may have been the motive behind Lovelace's death.

Since the start of the year eight persons have been killed in Clarendon.
