KEW, Hanover - Investigators were yesterday following strong leads in Thursday night's shooting death of 47-year-old Byron Carter, former JLP councillor/caretaker for the Cauldwell Division.

In the meantime, Western Hanover MP Ian Hayles, who stopped just short of linking Carter's death to politics, said the former caretaker who had deflected to the PNP prior to the December 5, 2007 local government elections, had recently been receiving several death threats.

Hayles alleged that Carter had disagreements with the JLP leadership in the constituency and was thrown out after the general elections. "(He) decided to come and work with myself and the PNP after the parish council elections were called. He worked very actively for us and I think it was testament of his work in the parish council that made us victorious and returned the PNP in charge of the Hanover Parish Council," Hayles said.

JLP constituency caretaker for Western Hanover, Donavan Hamilton, could not be reached yesterday for comment on the matter.

According to Corporal Sandra Salmon, the CCN liaison officer for Hanover, about 7:30 Thursday night Carter's body was found by the police in the rustic Kew district in the vicinity of his unfinished 12-apartment house.

The police said the burnt-out remains of his Toyota Prado motor vehicle was found nearby.

The body, which was lying in front of the smouldering vehicle in a pool of blood, had what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

The police said his feet were severely burnt.
