Saturday, December 29, 2007

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - Twenty-seven-year-old Wayne Simpson, a chef, and nephew of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor of the Gregory Park division, in St Catherine, Suzette Buchanan, was Thursday arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition by the Spanish Town police.

The police say they stopped a BMW motorcar along the Spanish Town Highway, and engaged the driver in conversation.

They said Simpson began acting suspiciously and following a search by the police, a Tarus pistol with serial number TSG86414, and 13 rounds of ammunition were found in his waistband.

The car he was driving was registered in Buchanan's name. The car was seized and taken to the Spanish Town police station where it was searched and handed over to the JLP councillor.

Simpson, who was visiting from the United Kingdom, and who gave his address as 25 Tunnell Avenue, London, England, arrived in the island a week ago on three weeks' vacation.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on January 8.
