Police hunt all-age school robbers

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

A manhunt is now on for two gunmen who staged a daring robbery at a school near Old Harbour, St Catherine yesterday, which left students and teachers traumatised.

The Old Harbour police reported that the armed robbers entered the compound of the Spring Gardens All-Age School about 7:45 yesterday morning and pulled their guns on the vice-principal, a teacher and a parent who were inside an office at the school.

"They drew their guns and demanded the keys to the vice-principal's 2007 Toyota Prado and also relieved the teacher of her wedding ring," a cop at the Old Harbour Police Station told the Observer.

The gunmen then drove away the sports utility vehicle which was said to have contained $200,000 and a Dell laptop computer.

"The students and staff at the school were deeply affected and traumatised by the incident," the cop said.
According to the police, yesterday's robbery was the latest in a series of robberies and gun crimes that have taken place in Old Harbour and its environs in recent times.

"We have seen a surge of gun crimes in recent times but we will taking the necessary steps to ensure that normality is restored to what was once a peaceful, crime-free community," one cop said.

The gunmen have been described as young men barely out of their teens, by police investigators.
