THE People's National Party's Maxine Henry-Wilson was yesterday confirmed winner of the South-East St Andrew constituency by 569 votes over the Jamaica Labour Party's Joan Gordon-Webley, following the end of the magisterial recount in the Half-Way-Tree resident Magistrate's Court. Henry-Wilson came away with 5,185 votes to Gordon-Webley's 4,616.
Shortly after the recount attorney Kathryn Phipps, who was a part of Gordon-Webley's legal team, told the Observer that lawyers would be filing a petition with the Supreme Court to void the elections in some polling divisions and for fresh elections to be called.
"The magisterial recount was only dealing with the counting of ballots, but we will be taking the matter further because the issues have not been resolved," Phipps said.
The issues referred to, according to Phipps, were the acts of intimidation and gun violence within the constituency on election day - September 3 - that resulted in a low turnout of Gordon-Webley's supporters in some of her strongholds.
Some of the areas where supporters Gordon-Webley supporters were unable to vote due to violence and intimidation are Deanery Road and Jacques Road, Phipps said.
