Escapee recaptured

Friday, July 06, 2007

THE police yesterday said they have recaptured one of four prisoners who escaped from the Constant Spring Police Station in St Andrew early Saturday morning.

Back in custody is Kevin Whyte from Chambers Lane in Spanish Town, St Catherine who was to be tried for driving away a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), Whyte was recaptured around mid-day on Tuesday during a police operation at Chambers Lane in the tough community of Tawes Pen. Additional charges were laid against him for escaping custody.

According to the CCN's Troy Anderson, the manhunt which was launched on Monday will continue.

Still on the run are Jason Hamilton of Friendship District in St Andrew and Dennis Kennedy from Sunlight Street, Kingston 13. Both were charged for murder. Also at large is Trevor Smith of Joseph's Road, Kingston 13 who was detained on reasonable suspicion for robbery with aggravation.

Reports from the Constant Spring Police are that the officers were conducting routine checks when it was discovered that the approximately 20 prisoners were in the process of escaping from a cell, the lawmen quickly responded and subdued the prisoners. Hamilton, Kennedy, Whyte and Smith, however, managed to escape.

The police said the men managed to abscond by cutting a section of the grill to the cell.
