SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - Daemon Palmer, a 24-year-old resident of Passagefort in Portmore, St Catherine yesterday pleaded guilty when he was taken before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court for conning some primary school students of $105.

Palmer, who was charged with obtaining money by false pretence, had gone to the Spanish Town Primary School, where he took $105 from seven grade two students, promising to buy them gears for a sporting competition.

After pleading guilty yesterday, Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar Gayle ordered that the man be given a psychiatric evaluation and return to court on June 19. She also ordered that Palmer pay a fine of $3,500, which she instructed be divided equally and be given to the seven grade two students.

The court heard that about 10:00 am on Tuesday, May, 22, while teachers were meeting with parents, Palmer entered the classroom and told the students he was collecting $20 from each student to buy T-shirts, sneakers and socks for them to compete in a basketball competition at the school on Labour Day.

Palmer told the court yesterday that he was unemployed and needed money to pay his rent.
