Jamaican mom wins battle to stay in England

Sunday, May 20, 2007

A Jamaican mother who said she fled to England after receiving a death threat from her abusive husband, has won her fight to stay in the United Kingdom, the BBC has reported.

According to the BBC, 49 year-old Joy Bowman and her 15 year-old daughter, Chena, have been granted indefinite leave to remain in England, two months after the British Home Office agreed to review their application for asylum.
"I am very happy. My friends and family are also over the moon," the BBC quoted Bowman, a trainee nurse who lives in Newcastle.

Bowman, who fled to the UK in 2001, benefitted from a campaign mounted earlier this year by her friends and supporters to prevent her deportation.
Her appeal, the BBC said, was supported by Labour MP for Tyne Bridge, David Clelland, who made representations to Home Office Minister Liam Byrne.

"It's been a long and traumatic wait for the family, and I am so pleased that we've finally managed to give this story a happy ending," the BBC reported Clelland as saying.
Both of Bowman's sons - Levon, 28 and Damian, 24 - were allowed to serve in the British Army because they are Commonwealth citizens.

Levon served in Iraq. However, he and his brother are no longer in the army and have been granted permission to stay in the country by the Home Office, the BBC said.
