MONTEGO BAY, St James - In what appears to be a rare move, the St James Police yesterday allowed an alleged 16-year-old high school rapist, who has been in custody since last week to sit his external examination.

"The student who has been in custody since the 10th of May and who attends one of the newly opened high schools in St James was taken out of his cell at Montego Bay Freeport Station today (yesterday) to sit his technical drawing exam at the station," Peter Salkey, the police's information officer for St James told the Observer.

Corporal Salkey added that the 11th grader was also granted permission to leave his cell on Monday to sit another paper at his school.

According to Salkey the gesture formed part of an initiative by the St James Police High Command aimed at fostering a better relationship with the police and the public.

Allegations are that on May 8, the 11th grader and another male student pulled a female student into a classroom and sexually assaulted her.

The matter was later reported to the police and two boys were subsequently arrested and charged with rape.
It is not clear when they are scheduled to appear in Court to face the charge.
