Woman accused of abandoning newborn in pit turns self in

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Falmouth, Trelawny - The woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a pit latrine at Compound in Falmouth last week has turned herself in to the police and is now under guard in hospital.

The police have, however, withheld the identity of the woman who they said is expected to be charged
with infanticide.

Last week the Falmouth police appealed to persons who knew the whereabouts of the mother of the dead baby to pass the information on to the station.

Last week, Michael Hoshing, a resident of Compound, said he was about to use the sanitary facility about 3:00 am Thursday when he discovered the body of the baby in the pit.

Hoshing said he became curious when he saw blood splattered on the floor of the facility, and when he ignited his cigarette lighter he saw the dead baby in the toilet pit.
