Murder accused said fit to stand trial
T K WHYTE, Observer correspondent
Friday, February 23, 2007

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - A psychiatric analysis of a man charged with murdering his mother and two brothers in St Catherine last September has determined that he is fit to stand trial.

The report was read when Christopher Oliver appeared in the Spanish Town Criminal Court Tuesday. Based on the evaluation, Oliver was remanded in custody to March 13 for a preliminary inquiry.

The evaluation was ordered when Oliver first appeared in court last September. The court also ordered that he be given Legal Aid representation.

The court was told that on September 13, 2006, Oliver went to his home at 125 Telfer Close, Twickenham Heights, Spanish Town, got into a rage and attacked his mother and four members of his family with a sledge hammer.

Oliver's mother, Myrtle Oliver, 48, his brothers Oneil Oliver, 17, and Omar Oliver, 14, were killed on the spot, while his sister, Ananda Oliver, 26, and her three-year-old son were injured.

Oliver was arrested three days later along Brunswick Avenue, Spanish Town.

On Tuesday, Detective Sergeant Dale Peart of the Spanish Town CIB said that was the fifth time that Oliver was appearing in court.
