SENTENCING of the man who slashed the throat of his cancer-stricken grandfather to put him out of his misery was yesterday rescheduled for December 15, as a requested psychiatric report was not available.

The man, Damion Barrett, a resident of Kingston 13, pleaded guilty to manslaughter before Justice Raymond King in the Home Circuit Court recently and was scheduled to be sentenced yesterday.

Barrett slashed the 80-plus-year-old Uriah Grant's throat on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 - allegedly because Grant, who was terminally ill with cancer of the tongue, constantly begged family members to kill him so that he would not become a "burden on the family".

Neighbours heard screams coming from Grant's Crescent Road, Kingston 13, home and summoned Grant's family members, who saw him coming from the house with blood gushing from his neck. Barrett was seen running from the house. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Barrett is said to have mental problems, but was deemed fit to plea.
