Four Clarks Town escapees surrender to police
HORACE HINES, Observer staff reporter
Monday, March 06, 2006

CLARKS TOWN, Trelawny - Four more of the 15 prisoners who broke out of the Clarks Town police lock-up on February 26 are back behind bars after they surrendered to the Clarks Town police Saturday at about 8:00 pm.

This brings to eight the number of escapees back in custody.

The four who surrendered are:
. Kewezie Bell, 23;
. Gavin Reid, 24;
. Tommy Sawyers, 17; and
. Dwayne Thompson, 22.

Bell, Reid and Sawyers are awaiting trial for murder in the death of Detective Constable Clinton Degouthe, who was killed during a gun battle with criminals in Trelawny nearly one year ago.

All four were accompanied by a justice of the peace when they turned themselves in.

Meanwhile, the police are appealing to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other seven men still at large - among them a fourth man charged with
Degouthe's murder - to contact the nearest police station.

The police reported that at about 5:00 am on February 26, cops at the Clarks Town lock-up were carrying out routine cell checks when they found that a number of prisoners were missing. Their checks showed that 15 prisoners had escaped by prying open the metal bars of their cell.
