Unrest brewing at St Ann Jamaica Bauxite
Observer Reporter
Thursday, February 09, 2006

DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann - A meeting is to be held today to try and settle a dispute between the early 400 unionised workers and the management of the St Ann Jamaica Bauxite, over what the employees claimed has been the short-payment of approximately $48 million in incentive allowances last year.

In the meantime, the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), which represents the workers, has given the government until the end of February to resolve the matter, failing which the workers could resort to industrial action, said Garfield Harvey,

".If we can't resolve the issue then we may have to resort to industrial action," said Garfield Harvey, the union's third vice-president. He said, however, he hoped there was no need for a work stoppage over the issue.
