MONTEGO BAY, St James - A police constable reported yesterday that he was beaten by a female cop and two male civilians, one a Caucasian, following a minor traffic accident on St James Street here. The Constabulary Communication Network's liaison Officer for St James, Constable Camille Tracy, told the Observer that an altercation took place between two cops, but was unable to give details about the incident.
The policeman, Constable Ricardo Morgan, who is stationed at the Coral Gardens Police Station in St James, said he left work and was driving his motor car in heavy traffic on St James Street when on reaching the vicinity of the traffic light between Embassy Place and William Street, he attempted to negotiate the traffic when his motor vehicle squeezed another car.
The policeman told the Observer that the male driver of the other vehicle alighted from his car, opened the door of his (Morgan's) car and removed the keys from the ignition. He said the man also attempted to forcibly remove him from the car.
Morgan added that a woman, who later identified herself as a cop, alighted from the vehicle and joined the man in trying to pull him out of the car. The constable alleged that after identifying himself as a policeman, the woman sent the driver back to the car for a bag which contained a firearm. The woman, he charged, removed the weapon from the bag and pointed it at him.
Morgan also alleged that a Caucasian male used a metal baton to hit him. One of the blows, he said, caught him in his head, resulting in a swelling. The constable said he dodged a blow from the swinging baton, which caught the female cop near one of her eyes.
Constable Morgan said he sought medical assistance and was in the process of filing legal action against his attackers. "I am feeling very humiliated. I am broken down in spirit. I feel let down by my own," Morgan told the Observer.
Last December, Corporal Grantley Waite, who was allegedly beaten by cops at the Mount Salem Police Station in St James, died at the Kingston Public Hospital.
