Cops question PNP activist in connection with fatal stabbing
Observer Reporter
Wednesday, February 01, 2006

PEOPLE'S National Party (PNP) activist Tony Welsh yesterday turned himself into the police, for questioning in connection with the January 15 killing of Damion Hussey, the Golden Spring resident who was stabbed, allegedly by men returning from a People's National Party rally.

Welsh was being questioned in the presence of his lawyers - Churchill Neita, Dian Jobson and Norma Linton.

The fatal stabbing of Hussey was allegedly sparked by a stone-throwing incident involving supporters of the JLP and persons returning from the launch of Peter Phillips' Solid as a Rock campaign at the National Arena. Hussey was beaten and stabbed to death after being accused of being involved in the stoning incident.

An eyewitness told the Observer that Hussey was nowhere amongst a group of men that had originally been targets of the mob, but only went outside after hearing the commotion.

His girlfriend said that both herself and Hussey were at home on the evening, when upon hearing a noise outside he pulled the door to the verandah, and was immediately set upon by men wearing Peter Phillips' campaign T-shirts.

Following the incident and a roadblock and demonstration by residents, Opposition spokesman on national security Derrick Smith urged Phillips to ensure a thorough investigation and the bringing to justice of the perpetrators of the crime.
