Alleged bus robber shot dead in Trench Town
Observer reporter
Saturday, January 14, 2006

A man, said to be involved in the robbery of a Jamaica Urban Transit Company bus Tuesday, was found dead Wednesday on Ninth Street in Trench Town, an inner city community in Kingston.

The Denham Town Police, who have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man, gave his name only as "Andre".

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Network - the police's information arm - reported that the man's body was found on the roadway with gunshot wounds. Residents had reported to the police that they heard gunshots at 11:30 Wednesday morning, just before Andre's body was found by the police.

Superintendent Delroy Hewitt of the Kingston West Police Station said Andre was involved in the robbery of a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus last Tuesday.

According to Hewitt, Andre, accompanied by two men and two women, boarded the JUTC bus at the intersection of Spanish Town Road and Collie Smith Drive at approximately 3:25 Tuesday afternoon.

After riding the bus to downtown Kingston and disembarking, the group re-boarded the bus, and at the intersection of Collie Smith Drive and Spanish Town Road they began to rob the passengers. In the confusion that followed, one of the robbers, a 16-year-old girl of Trench Town, was locked in the bus by the driver and carried to the Hunts Bay Police Station. The others fled the scene.

Police said their questioning of the girl led them to Federal Gardens in Trench Town, where a male suspect in the robbery was held at a house, but Andre managed to elude the police, fleeing into the area of Trench Town known as Zimbabwe where he was shot twice in the face by unknown assailants. A gold chain and a Motorola razr phone were taken off him, the police said.

The police said that initial reports suggest that Andre is from Montego Bay, the St James capital. The police said he is of dark complexion, slim build and 6 feet tall. He is believed by police to be in his mid-twenties, and has a $ sign tattooed on his right upper arm, as well as plaited hair.
