TWO shipments of compressed ganja that were destined for New York were yesterday seized by the Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) at APM Terminals, Customs officials said last night.
Information was sketchy up to press time, but according to the Customs Department, the police have so far detained one person in connection with one of the shipments. The consignee of the other shipment, the officials said, is a popular local figure.
The contraband, the Customs Department said, was concealed in the floors of both containers one of which was declared as a shipment of tinned goods and the other as baked products.
But Customs could not ascertain the quantity and cost of the weed. The sizes of the containers were also not confirmed.
The weed was detected during random checks by the CET. In 2004, several multi-million dollar x-ray machines were installed at the ports in 2004 to combat drugs and weapon smuggling.
Since the installation, the machines have detected several shipment of drugs, guns, and ammunitions as well as millions of dollars worth of goods smuggled here to evade government taxes.
The CET has also seized several high-end vehicles that were stolen in the US and shipped here as part of a sophisticated car-stealing ring.
