George Phang shot
ARNETT Gardens Football Club manager, George Phang, was shot last night by gunmen at the intersection of Septimus and Thompson streets in Jones Town, reviving memories of the gangland style murder of his friend, William “Willy Haggart” Moore, on a neighbouring street corner almost two years ago.
Phang, who received multiple gunshot wounds, was said to be in critical condition at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) late last night. Another man, who police named as Mark Manning, received one shot in one of his legs and was also taken to the KPH. His condition, however, was not considered serious.
According to the police, Phang was among a group of men playing dominoes on the street corner when a white Toyota Corolla motorcar drove up at about 9:30 and the occupants opened fire.
Last night, police maintained a strong presence in the community in an apparent effort to maintain calm.
Phang shared a close friendship with Moore and was a pallbearer at his funeral in May 2001.
Moore, and two other men — Albert “Blacka Douche” Bonner and Lowell “Big Bunny” Hinds, were gunned down at a section of Lincoln Crescent on the outskirts of Arnett Gardens in April 2001 by men travelling in a car.
Moore, believed to have been an underworld kingpin, was the reputed leader of the Black Roses Crew, a group of men that often congregated in the general area where the three men were killed and where Moore operated a business.
His killing eventually shattered a three-year-old ceasefire between rival political factions in South St Andrew, where Moore was shot, and the neighbouring constituency of West Kingston.
