BVI parliament dissolved to pave way for general election
TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (CMC) – Voters in this British Overseas Territory (BOT) are due to elect a new government by June 30 after Governor John Duncan dissolved the parliament.
Voter registration and transfers will continue until the end Tuesday, May 5.
According to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Constitution, elections can take place 21 days after the Parliament has been dissolved and not more than two months afterwards.
The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) of Premier Orlando Smith is seeking to become the first political party here to win consecutive elections in 16 years. The NDP is expected to face a strong challenge from the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) headed by Julian Fraser.
Opposition Leader, Ralph O’Neal, the longest serving politician here, has said he will not contest the upcoming poll.
