Sandals Dunn's River wins JPS' best energy use award

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

SENSITISING management and staff to the importance of energy conservation and instituting the necessary controls to make it a reality helped earn Sandals Dunn's River the prestigious JPS Large Hotel Category for Best Use of Energy award this year.

Director of external affairs, Frank 'Tony' Ray presents the JPS award in the large hotel category, for 'Best Use of Energy' to Sandals Dunn's River's general manager Louis Grant, while president of the JHTA Wayne Cummings looks on. The award is conferred on the organisation that has exhibited the best energy-efficient practices (through load and power factor calculations), while generating growth through high occupancy levels. Sandals Dunn's River was winning the award for the third consecutive year.

The award was handed over at the recent Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association anniversary luncheon and awards ceremony.

General manager Louis Grant was full of praise for his team for the outstanding work they put in throughout the past several years to make the resort energy efficient.

"It's a total team effort and I am proud and humbled to again receive this award," he said.

It is the third consecutive year that Sandals Dunn's River is winning the award, which is conferred on the organisation that has exhibited the best energy-efficient practices (through load and power factor calculations), while generating growth through high occupancy levels.

"Sandals Dunn's River ought to be commended for this win," said Jacky Simmonds, the JPS' manager of marketing and energy services. "The competition among the large hotel group tends to be very stiff. This outcome is testament to their continued commitment to employing sound energy management practices over the years."

Grant added: "Energy conservation is something that we take seriously and we do our best to conserve same in all areas. It is a task that is driven by all sectors of the hotel."

Sandals Dunn's River's chief engineer, Keith Duncan, said protectors and timers had been placed in every area of the hotel, including the lighting, pools and motors. In addition, he said that the resort staff had developed a culture of energy conservation where lights and air-conditioning units in areas not being used are immediately turned off. There is also a blackboard prominently displayed on property showing electricity usage and its cost, thus educating staff as to the importance of keeping units down.

"Education of team members has been the key to our success," Duncan noted. "No matter how much technical equipment you put in place, if staff is not on board you won't achieve optimum efficiency."
