Two more parish queens crowned

At the Saturday night crowning of Miss St Elizabeth 2008 held at the St Elizabeth Technical High School ( STETHS), Leontre Roberts, 19-year-old student of the Edna Manley College, dominated the competition, taking not only the crown, but also the sectional prizes for being the Most Poised, the Most Congenial, the Most Disciplined and the Most Culturally Aware contestant.

Roberts took to the stage in the talent section delivering her original song Jamaica Land we love, in an appropriate black green and gold costume, also created by her. Though performing well, the prize for the Best Performance was awarded to Skemar Brady, a 21-year-old student, sponsored by Allen's Pharmacy in St Elizabeth.

Twenty-two-year-old Vanessa Stultz, who stated her personal philosophy as It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog, walked away 1st runner up, with Brady being named as the 2nd runner up after the night of competition.

In celebration of Mother's Day, the mothers of the contestants were called on stage and presented with prizes courtesy of the Brijade Fitness Centre. Winner, Lenore Roberts couldn't fight the tears as her mother entered the stage to congratulate her.

Over in St James, at a coronation show held at the Wexford Court Hotel, Sachoy Ellis, 22-year-old graduate of the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology, walked away as queen of the second city. Ellis presented a dramatic piece entitled Rape in which she delivered a very intriguing performance, captivating members of the audience and earning the prize for the 'Best Presentation'.

Ellis, at the end of the night walked away with $100,000 as well as an additional $15,000 and other prizes from the sectional competitions, in which she was awarded the Philanthropy Award and the award for being the Most Culturally Aware contestant. During the show, the initial prize money of $50,000 was increased by the Klick Multimedia Ltd, the competition's title sponsor to $100,000 and the company also committed a cash prize of $300,000 to the winner of the competition next year.

Twenty-four-year-old teacher, Carie Hutchinson was awarded second place, as well as the prize for the Best Performance. Hutchinson, who was a crowd favourite, walked away with $30,000. Third place winner, 19-year-old Tania Levy, won $15,000 along with other prizes. Topal Crooks, a finalist in the competition captured the prize for Most Congenial and Best Costume.
