More than any of the other world-celebrated artistes appearing before her on the 17th staging of the St Lucia Jazz Festival, Anita Baker, on Saturday made the extended journey from Kingston via Miami to the eastern Caribbean Island, a worthwhile experience.
The city of Castries, St Lucia, which was almost completely wiped out by fire twice in its history, was once again set ablaze, except that this time it was by an incredible musical performance from the American diva, at the historic Pigeon Island.
For well over an hour, she brought tremendous joy to the thousands of St Lucians and visitors alike by giving the best that she got with her classy, refined brand of romantic soul music that outdid the theme of the event - "St Lucia Simply the Best".

One of the most popular romantic singers of her time, Anita Baker, smooth and mellow, had patrons screaming and, like the title of one of her songs, Caught Up in the Rapture. And that was exactly because with Sweet Love (another of her big hits) she was indeed fulfilling the promise she made in another musical number, Giving You The Best That I've Got. During her unforgettable stint, she invited at different times, Dionne Warwick and Angie Stone (both of whom were featured acts on Sunday), to share the moment with her, in what was, up until then, the highest point of this year's renewal of the St Lucia Jazz Festival.
If Air Supply gave their Jamaican fans on their Mother's Day appearance in Kingston, half of what they gave their St Lucian fans on Friday night, then it would be a testimony to the consistency of their high level of entertaining performances. In St Lucia they had the ladies going wild to the point where a bra was thrown on stage during their mesmerising performance.
