The Ward 21 Production team seems obsessed with females - artistes that is.
Kunley McCarthy, producer within the group, tells Splash via telephone that they have once again created the all-female riddim, aptly titled Estrogen, a follow-up to their last Dem Gyal Sit'n.
"We want to give the females a chance," McCarthy, "nuff a dem bad, bad, bad (really good), but because the man dem still a dominate the industry dem don't get a chance to shine." The new riddim features an all-female cast including Lady Saw, Macka Diamond, Lady G, D'Angel, Timberlee, Queen Paula, Natalie Storm, Stacious and Tifa to name a few. The latter who visited the Observer on Tuesday to talk of her new track on the riddim, says Estrogen, like Dem Gyal, offers the young female acts like herself a certain level of exposure. "By doing this Ward 21 is ensuring the survival of the female act in the dancehall," she adds.
But Tifa is a still-burgeoning act, however, an artiste like Queen Paula who many believe is on the downturn sees voicing atop Estrogen as a way for her to get back out there. "Me glad for it, I really need it man," Queen Paula tells Splash in a phone conversation recently, "is a reall good thing Ward 21 a do".
She remains adamant that this riddim will be the it-factor in taking her to the mainstream. "Me believe seh dis is it for me," she tells Splash. For the more established Macka, being on the riddim is a way to keep things current.
"You know you have to keep yourself out there," Macka says, "on the riddim, I didn't want to go with the regular thing. I switched up my flow".
The Estrogen riddim has been getting steady airplay since it first premiered last week.
