Dear Editor,
Former Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields made a poignant yet timely statement when he suggested that all members of the police force should undergo a lie detector test. He did not stop at the statement, but gave recommendations for those who failed or refused to be subjected to the test.
We have got to a point in Jamaica where it is perceived that lawlessness reigns supreme and our justice system has failed miserably. If we are serious about our reputation as a nation and want to wage war on crime, I recommend serious consideration to the words of Frank Harris, who said, "Strong people are made by opposition like kites that go up against the wind." Somebody has to bell the monsters we face. Confidence must be returned to the business community and to law-abiding citizens. Public servants, beginning with our politicians, must also be made to take the lie detector test. It is time to implement these treasures. It cannot wait, tomorrow may be too late. "Jamaica Bridge" is burning down.
Since we are in the process of restructuring the public service, employees in all ministries and government departments need to take polygraph tests. Many of these people have been labelled as corrupt, therefore if the prime minister is serious about the matter of credibility he should volunteer to take the polygraph test himself, and change legislation for all members of parliament to do the same, that is, lead by example.
I submit that if this position were to be taken it would be a repeat of the day Herod and Pilate, previously enemies, became friends because they were against Jesus Christ. Mr Prime Minister, you promised change. We need to experience positive change. The majority of Jamaicans do not have 24-hour security systems and we do not have another country to flee to, should things become more unbearable. If you do not have the political will to do the right thing in all areas of governance, please step aside and make way for someone who will rise to the occasion!
