Disappointing Miss Jamaica wardrobe
Thursday, October 29, 2009
Dear Editor,
I'm not a huge fan, but Miss Jamaica World has her work cut out for her. The article, "Our queen departs", in the Sunday Observer of October 25 showcased pieces from her wardrobe. Elsewhere online,
one can see photos of all the pieces individually.
Except for a few pieces, most were ghastly and "costumy", very overdone. It was like the designers attempted to create styles well outside their league. Is this the best Jamaican designers could come up with, knowing that the world will be watching? Isn't this an outlet for national creativity and international exposure and marketing? And what's up with a final night stage gown, a bird-like gown, overdone with blue feathers. Is Kerrie Baylis Lebanese or Jamaican?
Why do Jamaicans get it all mixed up so many times? With so many amazing designer couture shops on the island, surely the local stylists could've come up with a better wardrobe. If a queen isn't comfy with her own clothes, what's the point of sending her overseas to represent? This is perhaps the worst Miss Jamaica wardrobe ever!
