Cable dilemma

Thursday, May 08, 2008

Dear Editor,

The residents of Hope Pastures were previously served by the cable provider, Entertainment Systems. Then all of a sudden we were told that Flow had bought them out.

The intervention of the Broadcasting Commission was, to say the least, minimal, and if anything, Flow got a mild slap on the wrist requiring them to give, for a limited few months, ongoing service to existing customers.

Hope Pastures citizens, like other areas where Flow has bought out the exising providers, are faced with a major choice.

The choice is between an inefficient existing operator and an arrogant external competitor. It is the proverbial Jamaican choice - of the "black dog and monkey".

In the short term, when the grace period given to Flow expires, what will Hope Pastures residents do? Buy into the Flow service?

If we don't like the arrogant option, then it would appear that the citizens would have to revert to satellite dishes. The option is being explored.
